Like I said above, it’s an ambitious series with a lot of inner workings and complexities to each of the gameplay mechanics. Most of them are done well while others are passable. Port Royale 4 has a lot of varied elements to it. Information is presented relatively quickly and the addition of a viceroy helps you feel connected to the surrounding world and nations. Even though I typically avoid campaigns for this style of game, it was actually nice to have a little more guidance after completing the tutorial.Įven though Port Royale 4 doesn’t have the strongest plot guiding your every step, there are a lot of factoids and a wealth of information to be gleaned from the time period. The shape of the world during the 1500’s is imparted to the player before handing control over. An introductory video shows slides while a narrator sets the stage. There is a campaign which lets you play as various nations. There isn’t an overarching narrative to drive your time in the game. Port Royale 4 is an open waters game where you make it what you will. Review, to see if Port Royale 4 runs aground or floats to the top. If you want to learn more, now’s the time to board the good ship S.S. I say ambitious because it takes common elements from multiple strategy and sim games and ships them off in one vessel. It’s an ambitious take on the seafaring adventures surrounding the Carribean Islands.

Publishers Kalypso promise that you’ll “engage in tactical, turn-based naval battles with powerful captains,” as well as forging trade routes and growing your township into a 17th century metropolis. We’ll wager your competition won’t always appreciate your efforts, particularly if you choose to forge an aggressive path. As illustrated by P ort Royale 4‘s other trailers, there’s every chance your player’s ship will be waylaid by others, particularly since it casts you as the governor of an up-and-coming colony. That said, you won’t be able to sit around and gawp all the time. Take a look for yourself:Ĭlearly, a lot of work’s gone into making Port Royale 4 look this good, right down to the realistic movement of the waves and the sunlight glinting off the water. It’s so relaxing that you could mix yourself a Mai Tai, lean back in your chair and drift away. Instead, there’s just wonderful warm seas, water so clear you can see the seabed, and some utterly gorgeous sunsets. There’s no ship-on-ship combat, no piratical murder or shoddy ethics, though we know that’ll figure into the final game.
